First up we have May’s 1st prize winner: Barkers Home based in Northallerton. Who’s wonderful photo of Berni Parker’s greetings cards, giftware and stationery really caught the eye!
Tell us a little about your shop…
We are a Home store situated on the outskirts of the market town of Northallerton in North Yorkshire, with a well established department store already on our high street concentrating more on fashion. A recent expansion of the Home store has meant we can extend into gifts, cards and home accessories with everything from photo frames to door stops, home fragrance and silk flowers.
What do you love about Berni Parker Designs’ cards?
Everyone can relate to the characters, we all know a “Partner in Wine” a “Queen of Bridge” or a “Recovering Workaholic”.
What links do you have to the local community?
We have generations of customers who shop with us and reward them with a loyalty card. It’s lovely to be able to help put together a wedding gift list for someone you have watched grow up, who used to come in shopping with mum or grandma. We are very much a rural community so all things pheasants, foxes and wellingtons tends to sell.
What tips do you have for fellow small business owners?
As I have only been buying gifts for just over a year I don’t feel qualified to give any advise but I’m open to accepting some. My initial inspiration has come from the invaluable trade fairs on offer to us around the country.
Barkers were nominated in the Best Department Store-Retailer of Gifts category at The Great Gift Awards 2017, along with retailing greats including Fenwicks and John Lewis-Oxford Street…AND WE WON!!
How do you market your business?
We are a bricks and mortar only business choosing not to sell on line, however we do use our website to showcase our selection of brands as well as our social platforms. We also have a number of seasonal sponsorships and advertisements within local fashion and interior magazines.
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
Our customer service and loyal staff. We also love to source local products where possible, we have chocolate made down the road in York, hand crafted stools from our very own local woodsmith and cards with local scenes on.
