Gift Shop Hub loves these funny and honest greeting cards from Cheeky Zebra. We asked owner and designer Sasha Gupta who is based mainly in her living room to tell us a little about the message behind her cards…
“I like to think I am quite loving but tend to wrap my love in back handed compliments which pretty much sums up Cheeky Zebra!
The idea is to make cards for real life so all the cards are based on something I’ve actually said or done or at the very least thought silently in my head. I also try to make genuine cards for the not so shiny times because I think they get overlooked and sometimes a generic ‘feel better’ doesn’t cut it.
I’m constantly on the look out for unusual situations that require a good card, so if you have one let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with!”
How did you start out?
I was working in a fairly corporate role in London and was longing to do something more creative. I kept seeing these awesome unstuffy greeting cards on Facebook and thought I could do that so I decided to give it a go.
Where do you sell your products?
I sell my products on Etsy, via my own website www.cheekyzebra.com. I also contact shops directly that I think would be a good fit.
What do you consider to be the main challenges facing small business at the moment?
Setting up a small business comes with a reliable flow of challenges you never anticipated! I think a big challenge for any small business is being creative when you have limited marketing funds. This year I couldn’t afford to attend a trade show but that just meant I had to do better when calling shops directly!
What tips do you have for fellow small business owners?
I would say just to keep going even if you are not 100% sure of how it will all work out in the end keep taking each small step because these actions build a foundation and that’s when momentum starts to happen. At least that’s what I’m telling myself!
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
Our particular brand of humour and honesty, the cards are based on my own life experiences so they are definitely for real life!
How important is social media in promoting your business?
Vital as I have an online store. I have found that organically posting on Instagram with relevant hashtags has been great for finding new customers.
What has been your most successful promotion/marketing idea?
I am, still figuring it out! I have found that injecting more of myself into the brand has been really helpful so I try and document the journey (good, bad and ugly) as much as possible.
What are your plans for the future
Cheeky Zebra has thrown me into a whole new world and inspired me to pursue more creative jobs so there’s that! The plan is to keep building and eventually get the attention of a major retailer. I am also desperate to find a mentor who knows the industry/had done something similar… *shameless plug*
What features/articles would you like to see on Gift Shop Hub?
I loved the article on Dean Morris as he is basically my hero in terms of what he has achieved in opening the doors for more risqué humor based designs. So, more interviews please!
