Down Your High Street is a online marketplace dedicated purely to the local shop owner to make it easier to connect with people in and around their area and across the UK. Their mission is to bridge the gap between offline and online retail so the independent high street shop owners of the UK can profit online to benefit their physical store.
Gift Shop Hub spoke to CEO Daniel Whytock about the website.
Tell us a little about Down Your High Street…
Down Your High Street is an online marketplace that represents independent, brick and mortar retailers and provides them with the opportunity to showcase and sell products to consumers all over the UK.
What was your inspiration?
The high street has been close to my heart ever since I worked on the stalls at my local market. Since hearing about the closure of High Street shops over and over again in the press, we saw an opportunity to help out and so Downyourhighstreet.com launched.
Who is your website aimed at?
Downyourhighstreet.com is aimed at consumers who care about the High Street and purchasing unique products from independent retailers. Consumers often have good intentions to break-free from the Amazon era but convenience can often act as a barrier. Down Your High Street provides a platform for busy consumers to shop locally from shops all over the UK.
What makes your campaign stand out from the crowd?
We provide an opportunity for retailers to increase their online presence, as we know a lot of shop owners do not have the resources to invest time into marketing their business, we do this for them. Boosting their product and business marketing enables independent retailers to increase their customer base to national rather than just the consumers within their town.
What do you consider to be the main challenges facing small businesses at the moment?
Independent retailers have faced a lot of challenges over the years, and yet figures have just been released which state that The High Street continues to suffer from weak consumer spending growth. High Street boutiques can be affected from road closures, parking charges, opening hours and of course online shopping. We are here to bridge the gap and provide consumers with another means of shopping from the High Street. We also offer a click and collect option to increase footfall for retailers.
What tips do you have for small business owners?
It is all too easy to ignore the dramatic changes that are happening to consumer behavior and the way we shop. New technologies and grand ideas are only going to keep coming to allow consumers to get the products they want instantly. Our key tip would be to stay aware of these trends and although it is not easy to compete against them, we must work together to allow consumers to remember the importance of shopping locally, from small independent retailers.
What are your plans for the future?
We have some huge plans coming up to really create a movement for the High Street. That is all we can say for now!
How can people sign up and get involved?
