We have been designing and developing websites for 14 years now. What preparation work should be undertaken?
It’s vital that we have a full and complete understanding of what’s going to be involved with your project, so we can give you accurate costs and timescales. A useful tip that we give to clients when they’re planning a new website, is for them to ‘imagine’ they are compiling everything for a glossy printed brochure for their business (even though they may not actually be printing one!).
Think about what you would like on the front cover, the welcome/intro page, the services pages, images you want to display, colours, logo, style, etc, etc. All the elements that you would want to display in a printed brochure are also relevant for most websites.
Who will write the content?
Generally clients already have copy written for their business, or if not we encourage them to write this as it’s better coming from them, even if we may edit or embellish it if required. We do offer copy-writing services but this increases project timescales and costs.
How about photography?
Our clients often have this, but we can provide 2 options here. Either we visit and take pictures or we can arrange for a professional photographer to come and shoot on location.
How important is responsive website design?
A quick look at the visitor stats of your website will show a growing trend of people viewing your pages using mobile devices (For detailed statistics ensure your website is linked to your Google Analytics account). This has increased dramatically over the last three years, so we now offer ‘responsive web design’ for new projects. If you look at www.papersalad.co.uk on your smartphone or tablet, you will see that the display adapts and shifts so you don’t have to resize, pinch and scroll as you do with older websites.
Gift Shop Hub Editor Note: It is said we reached the tipping point of more people viewing websites on mobile platforms than home computers in October 2016. Basically if you can’t view your website in the correct ratio on a phone or ipad you’re potentially losing more than half of your customers.
What after support do you offer?
All of our bespoke websites are guaranteed for 90 days from launch, which is typically enough time to weed out any bugs and snags. Going forward we have various levels of support depending on the needs of individual clients. Most clients just have occasional ad-hoc support which is invoiced at the end of the month for support time used.
Can your customers edit their website themselves?
Almost all of our websites are built on comprehensive content management systems, so the typical content changes can be made easily by the client. Some clients still prefer us to update their websites, so this time is dealt with under support.
